Oberon

Get to Know Titania – Fairy Queen or Dry Hopped American Wheat Ale

Tasting Notes: Juicy orange, mango, peach, & pine hop aromas. Named after Oberon’s other half, Titania lives up to its namesakes as a force to be reckoned with, combining sweet citrus tastes with an assertive hop presence. As with most of our beers, we do not filter out the yeast from Titania, resulting in a cloudy appearance.  This appearance is also a signifier of the enhanced fragrance and bright hop aromas. These amplified aromas are created by the Centennial in the kettle that is followed by a dry hopping of Mosaic, Citra and other hops and results in a soft bitter taste.   This beer, with its complex tastes, aromas, and texture exemplifies our tradition of innovation.  See if Titania is available on our Tap Cam, or check out our Events Calendar to see if an event near you will be featuring it.

Celebrate summer with an Oberon Beermosa

Looking for something for a summer afternoon or Sunday brunch? Here is a recipe developed by our sales team for the perfect simple Oberon beermosa.  Here's the recipe: 25% sparkling white wine 15% orange juice 60% Oberon Use a mint leaf and/or an orange as garnish From our experience, we've found it works best to pour the sparkling white wine first, then the orange juice and top it off with Oberon. Make sure to pour slowly to avoid making a mess. We've also found using fresh-squeezed orange juice tastes best, but you can use whatever juice you prefer.

Homebrewing Oberon: Tips on cloning our American Wheat Ale

Before we were a brewery, we were a homebrew supply store. That's how our president and founder Larry Bell got his (and our) start. It wasn't until two years after the Bell's General Store opened that we sold our first official beer as a brewery.  More than 30 years later, our homebrew roots still run deep. From our support of the American Homebrewers Association to our annual Bell's Homebrew Competition, we offer support and advice to home brewers every day. So what better way to celebrate those roots than by offering some tips on how to make a clone brew of our American Wheat Ale? Plus, for our fans who do not currently live in an area where we distribute just yet, this is a great way to enjoy a taste of summer. As we have advised countless homebrewers before, there are certain things about our recipes that we keep close to the vest, but if you are looking to brew a Oberon clone of your own, here is some advice.  The malt bill is relatively straightforward: stick with 2-row base malt and a decent portion of wheat, something in the 40-50% range. Wheat can stick to a lauter, so use as much of that range as you can within the limitations of your lauter tun; adding rice hulls can help improve the flow. If you are going the malt extract route, there are manufacturers that offer various wheat/barley malt extract blends that will work just fine. A touch of caramel malt will be all the color you need usually. Aim for a target original gravity of around 1.056 and moderate fermentability. The ABV should be just below 6%. Oberon uses several hops, but the signature varietals are Hersbrucker and Saaz. Target roughly 30 IBUs. Don’t be lured into using coriander or orange peel: Oberon is made with just four ingredients (water, hops, yeast and malted barley/wheat). You can culture our house yeast out of one of our bottles if you're comfortable with that; it's certainly the preferred option for a solid flavor match. Otherwise, our General Store has found that most people looking to clone one of our recipes lean towards ale strains with a straightforward ester profile and good attenuation. You can find supplies on our online store, by using the links below - our General Store is a great resource for ingredients and homebrewing supplies.  All grain ingredient kit Extract ingredient kit Here's to the next batch!

Video: What's that stuff in my Oberon?

We sometimes get the question: "What's that stuff in my Oberon?"  It's actually yeast and protein. It a big part of what makes Oberon taste like it does. John Mallett, our director of operations, explains why it's there and how to redistribute it.             [[{"fid":"1980","view_mode":"default","fields":{"format":"default"},"type":"media","field_deltas":{"1":{"format":"default"}},"link_text":null,"attributes":{"class":"media-element file-default","data-delta":"1"}}]]

Video: Where did the original face of Oberon come from?

The original face of Oberon lives in the Eccentric Cafe. It’s not the painting on the East side of the building. Nor on one of the mini-kegs in the Back Room. It may have gone unnoticed: it’s on a small, wooden mask that hangs with several others above our taps. Larry Bell purchased the mask while in Muir Woods in California. He brought it back to Kalamazoo to use for inspiration when creating the Oberon sun that is featured on the label to this day. Hear Larry tell the story:

Sweetwater's Oberon-inspired donut collaboration set for Oberon Release Day

For this year’s Oberon release, we’re teaming up with our friends at Sweetwater’s Donut Mill to present a special treat. The Oberon-inspired donut is a tie-dyed glazed cake, with blue frosting, orange, yellow and black sprinkles with a blue drizzle. The donuts will be available on Monday, March 21 at Sweetwater’s locations in Kalamazoo and Battle Creek. See a list here. Sweetwater’s is a family-owned business that started in Kalamazoo in 1983, the same year Larry Bell opened his homebrew supply shop. Its donuts have received numerous awards and for good reason - they are delicious. There are several Oberon Day events across our distribution area. Check out our events page for more details.
