Bell’s, Deschutes collaborative beer celebrates Oregon brewery’s 30th Anniversary

We are honored to celebrate another independent craft brewery’s 30th Anniversary. Tim Gossack, Bell’s Production Manager, was one of eight former Deschutes brewers invited back to Bend, Oregon to brew a special, unique one-time collaboration brew to help celebrate Deschutes Brewery’s incredible milestone. Schwarzbier is a Dark Lager with an ABV of 6.4%. This limited release will be available on draught and in 12 oz. cans packaged in 6-packs. Deschutes’ Founder, Gary Fish takes pride in the success of the collaboration brewers after their time at Deschutes because they all, continue to make major contributions to the craft industry. “I’m glad they are pursuing their passion and have all been successful at it,” said Fish. “It speaks to their talent and perseverance. Every single one of them makes really good beer, and we’re proud of all of them.” Tim was Head Brewer at Deschutes from 1990 until 1996.  The recipe is a modified version of a recipe he created after leaving Deschutes. “Deschutes Brewery launched my career in brewing and I have been forever grateful to have worked there. I was hired in 1990 for my science background and cursory knowledge of beer brewing and beer styles, Gossack said. “But, I think I was truly hired for my strong back and hardworking farmer boy background. I could shovel mash, move full kegs and carry two bags of grain up the stairs at a time!” The beer will begin shipping to Deschutes’ distributors in late August in states that Bell’s does and does not currently distribute to. The can will include the Bell’s logo and the story of this collaboration beer. The Deschutes Brewery 30th anniversary collaboration “family tree” also includes John Harris, Deschutes Brewery’s original brewmaster with Ecliptic Brewery, Frank Appleton a brewing consultant responsible for creating the recipes of Deschutes’ beloved brands such as Black Butte Porter and Cascade Golden Ale, Tony Lawrence from Boneyard Brewery, long time brewer Mark Vickery, Paul Arney from The Ale Apothecary and Cam O’Connor and Larry Sidor now with Crux Fermentation Project. Make it Bell’s Official™; new Hazy IPA coming in February

A brand new beer will join our year-round lineup early next year: Bell’s Official Hazy IPA. Official brings pungent American hops and wheat malt together in the brewhouse. Double dry-hopped, Bell’s Official uses a combination of Mosaic, Citra, Azacca, Amarillo and El Dorado hops. Beer fans will enjoy notes of peach, stone fruit and tropical hop characteristics with a dry finish and balanced bitterness; a refined beer for those who love hops and for those who prefer wheat beers.  “We do American IPAs really well. We also do wheat beers very well. Official brings the best of both and combines them in a way that is approachable and enjoyable no matter what you prefer,” said Larry Bell, Bell’s President and Founder. “The name of the beer is simple, yet it makes a statement,” he said. This is the first in a series of new beer announcements that will highlight and showcase the continued innovation that we are known for, Bell hinted. Development of this beer began in 2017 with the limited release of Titania and later, Larry’s Latest IPA. Both inspired this new beer and helped Bell’s Innovation and Brewing Teams refine the recipe for Bell’s Official. With an ABV of 6.4%, Official is still incredibly drinkable and like many of our other beers, unfiltered. It will be available to order across our 40-state distribution area, as well as in Washington DC and Puerto Rico. Official will be available in 4-packs of 16 oz. cans, 6-packs (12 oz. bottles and cans) and on draught, making it Bell’s Official beer of get-togethers, the back yard, after work, nights out (and at home), the journey, a good day , hikes… you name it.

(New Jersey): Hunterdon was founded in 1996 by college buddies and fellow beer enthusiasts Michael Short and Dave Masterson. The company originally started out as a New Jersey contract brewer, distributing their prized Jersey Shore Gold to a handful of loyal customers across the state. Mike and Dave managed the company on their own, working tirelessly as both salesmen and delivery drivers for the first two years. Craft beer in the state of New Jersey was not at all where it is today and getting people on board was definitely a challenge. In 1998, they were able to hire a few salesmen and purchase a couple more vans to make life a little bit easier for the two passionate yet very tired young entrepreneurs. A year later they relocated from their small make-shift office in Califon, NJ that consisted of a sole phone, fax, computer and printer to a warehouse in Phillipsburg, NJ where they would take the business to the next level. When 2000 rolled around, Mike and Dave realized the need for craft beer representation in the state of New Jersey and decided it was time to make the switch to a full-time beer wholesaler. Some of their first brands included Dogfish Head, Weyerbacher, Yards, Allagash and a collection of unique imports from B.United International. Slowly but surely they began acquiring more craft brands and getting additional sales reps out on the street. Over the next decade, the name ‘Hunterdon’ became synonymous with craft beer in New Jersey and more and more breweries looked to Mike and Dave for help distributing their product in the Garden State. Today, Hunterdon is proud to have one of the best craft beer portfolios in the country, with over seventy domestic craft beer and spirit brands to speak of. The company also boasts a tremendous line of specialty imports, sakes, meads, wine and ciders from around the world. Hunterdon also has a rapidly growing local portfolio. The Garden State has a diverse collection of breweries, distilleries, cider makers, vineyards, and meaderies. We are thrilled to be able to grow the love of craft with the talented folks of New Jersey. Now, located in Whitehouse Station, NJ, the company has over 150 full-time employees and more than 40 sales reps on the road each day making New Jersey a great place to drink craft beverages. From their humble beginnings as Jersey Shore Gold salesmen operating with one delivery van, a couple of hand trucks and a ‘fly by the seat of their pants’ attitude, Mike and Dave are proud of where their journey has taken them. And we hope you are too!

Meet Überon, the Whiskey Barrel Aged version of Bell's Oberon

Tasting Notes: Whiskey barrel aged beer with spicy, toffee characteristics and a warming finish.  A part of the same family, Oberon and Überon share fruity traits, but little besides that.  Originally brewed in the mid-2000's and then again in 2012, 2017 marks the third release of Überon.   The main reason for barrel-aging this beer is to coax flavors out of the barrels and allow the beer to interact with the whiskey. The end result is a copper colored beer with whiskey characteristics that portray woody, vanilla and candy-like flavors.  See if Überon is available on our Tap Cam, or check out our Events Calendar to see if an event near you will be featuring it. Also, keep your eye out for more specialty and innovative beers! Want more Oberon? Oberon fans take note, next year’s release day is set for March 26. Another exciting addition for 2018 will be the debut of Lager of the Lakes in 12 oz. cans, packaged in 6-packs. Bottles will be officially retired as a packaging option. New series In all, at least four new Bell’s beers will debut next year. As part of that, a new series will also come to life for the first time. “Hell Hath (No Fury) was always meant to be a trilogy of beers. That dream is finally becoming a reality,” Larry Bell, Bell’s President and Founder, said. Brewed along the lines of a Belgian-inspired stout, Hell Hath No Fury is a Dark Ale that will be released between two new companion beers. Road to Hell will be released first in July, followed by Hell Hath No Fury in September and then Sympathy for the Devil in November. Both additions to the new series will feature label art from southwest Michigan native and celebrated artist, David Coverly. He also illustrated the Hell Hath No Fury and Bell’s Java Stout labels that are still used today. Increased availability Sparkleberry Ale, a fan favorite since it debuted at Kalamazoo Pride in 2013, will head to the Bell’s canning line for the first time in June. A Belgian-style Tripel brewed with raspberries, Sparkleberry will be released in 16 oz. cans, packaged in 4-packs. 30 years in the making Last but not least, another Bell’s milestone will be celebrated in 2018. 30th Anniversary Cherry Stout Reserve will be released in May, commemorating the debut of Bell’s Cherry Stout in 1988. This celebratory beer will be a special version of one of Bell’s signature stouts made with cherry juice sourced from Michigan’s Traverse City region. It is another testament that speaks to the honor of being Michigan’s oldest craft brewery. Additional details will be shared on Bell’s social media and website as they become available.
